Spring
2010, Business Leader Development Seminar
Title:
Employee Health and Wellbeing
About the
Seminar:
The seminar will focus both on the case for why businesses are
keenly interested in the physical and mental health of their
employees and the ways businesses try to maintain and improve
employee health. Through class activities and visits by
executives, students will also learn about ways to maintain
personal physical and mental health and how that can enhance
their future career pursuits.
Professor:
Dr. Chester Spell, Associate Professor of Human
Resources Management.
Dr.
Spell has researched and written on various human resources
topics such as adoption of employee substance abuse programs,
the benefits organizations provide to employees to help balance
work and family demands, and employee perceptions of the
fairness of their benefits packages. Besides the considerable
knowledge of Dr. Spell, there will be numerous guest speakers
who will also offer their experience and expertise to seminar
participants on the subject matter. The seminar provides a
tremendous networking opportunity for participating
students.
Qualifications: Any SBC student of
sophomore standing or higher is eligible to apply for the
seminar, and the 3 credits earned from the seminar are accepted
as a business elective for most majors/concentrations. A student
can take the seminar without completing any of the other
requirements for the BLDP.
Meeting Time:
Friday mornings from 9 to 11:40 a.m.
Early
Deadline: Monday, October 26, 2009, at 5 p.m.

Seminar space is
limited to only 15 students. Each application needs to be
supported by two references, and the two reference letters
must also be received by the October 26, 2009 deadline.
Admission to the three-credit BLDP seminar is by application
only, and enrollment in the seminar is limited to 15 students.
Students can apply online (see appropriate link on this
website). Application (and admission) to the Spring 2010
semester’s BLDP seminar will be ongoing until the class is
filled. The sooner you apply, however, the better your chances
will be to be admitted. Each application must be supported
by two letters of recommendation. One of the two letters of
reference must be from a professor or instructor, the other from
a non-relative (preferably a current or former employer or
supervisor) who can attest to the applicant’s character,
motivation, and/or leadership potential. All reference letters
should be directed to Dr. Allie Miller, School of Business,
Rutgers University, 227 Penn St., Camden, NJ 08102.
