BLDP Spring Seminar
Dr. Sridevi Shivarajan, BLDP Program Director, announces that the Business Leader Development Program (BLDP) seminar for spring 2012 is “Non-Profit Leadership and Management,” taught by our own campus Chancellor, Wendell Pritchett. The seminar is tentatively scheduled to be a Friday afternoon once/week class.
This course will examine the leadership and management of non-profit organizations, the fastest growing (by employment) sector of the economy. The course will assess the challenges and opportunities facing leaders of these organizations from a variety of perspectives including, economic, social, political, and legal perspectives and will gain a greater understanding of the role of these important institutions in our society. The class readings will include history, economics, law, and policy. The class will visit several non-profit organizations and meet and interview leaders of non-profit organizations from several fields. Class requirements will include reflection papers and an engaged participation in class discussions and presentations.
This is a rare opportunity to take an interesting seminar course from an instructor that most students don’t get the privilege of working with directly.
The initial deadline for applications was 5 p.m. on Monday, October 24th. Applicants meeting this deadline will have a response in time for early registration. If there is space left, there will be a second deadline for later applications. However, this seminar is likely to be in high demand, so it’s better not to wait. If you’re interested, go to the web page: www.camden-sbc.rutgers.edu/BLDP for instructions and to fill out the online application form. Be sure to contact your two reference letter writers early enough that there letters will reach the office of the Director before the deadline, as well. Letters may be send hard copy or as email attachments. (And, remember, people who have already taken a BLDP seminar are eligible to take a second one by sending a letter of interest to the Director before that deadline.)
Dr. Sridevi Shivarajan, serves as director of the BLDP Program. She is visiting assistant professor Human Resource Management and Organizational Behavior at the Rutgers School of Business—Camden. Her email address is srishiv@camden.rutgers.edu and her mailing address is Rutgers School of Business-Camden, 227 Penn Street, Camden, NJ 08102.

Rutgers Students Offer Innovative Solutions to Home Foreclosure Problems
The focus of the case this year was decision-making at “Ingenuity Bank” and the situation of their customer, the Hendersons, whose best option might be to simply walk away from their home, letting the bank foreclose because the remaining mortgage is substantially higher than the current value of the home. Judges assessed teams’ coverage of financial, legal and ethical considerations, as well as their skill in making a top notch presentation of proposed solutions.
In addition to the competition itself, the visit allowed time for a great deal of cross-school student interaction. This creates a new network of contacts across the US and Canada with schools such as Boston College, Brigham Young, Case Western, Georgetown, Purdue, Simon Fraser, USC, US Naval Academy, Wisconsin-Madison, and many others. Follow-up email contact and facebook exchanges have already begun.
The first Rutgers-Camden team competed five years ago, and this year’s team is only the third. What happened in the other two years? The timing and style of the competition requires intense work for a two week period around the beginning of October, just about the time people are facing multiple mid-term exams and presentations. Additionally, the up front registration fee has to be paid during summer, so people have to commit in the spring to making the necessary sacrifices during their fall semester to prepare case material and travel to Arizona for the competition. For two past years, no team was identified that felt they could make an advance commitment for substantial additional work in the fall semester.
As is often the case, it was two of our busiest students who chose to take on this important representation of our campus for this year’s competition. Kevin and Jessica deserve a great deal of credit for their hard work and impressive showing. Additionally, due to an uneven number of schools in the four divisions, there was a random drawing to determine which team in the larger division would have to be the only competing team to make their major presentation at 7:30 in the morning. (Every other division started a 8:00 a.m.) Rutgers was chosen for the ‘early bird’ team, so these two deserve a special pat on the back for being alert, friendly and professional at that hour, in spite of possibly feeling a little jet lag due to the 3-hour time difference.
Please congratulate our team for their excellent work, if you see them. Additionally, join in the discussion of how we might better organize this into the curriculum or other ongoing activities to ensure we always have a team and can build toward snagging that top prize. Chat about your ideas with Kevin and Jessica, or email suggestions to Professor Porter (gporter@rutgers.edu).
