BLDP NOTICE  - Early Deadline for Fall 2009 BLDP Seminar Application Rapidly Approaching

The early deadline for this coming fall semester’s BLDP seminar is Monday, March 9, 2009, at 5 p.m. The Fall 2009 BLDP seminar, “Great Business Failures: Their Causes and Consequences,” is very timely because it is a topic that not only is currently receiving a great deal of media attention, but is also in the forefront of the minds of government leaders and policymakers. A brief introduction to the seminar topic: From the Dutch Tulip Bubble of 1637 to the Credit Crisis of 2008/’09, this course will explore the causes and consequences of business failures. By examining significant business failures in history, students will learn what causes businesses to fail, how these failures affect society, and how governments and organizations react to business failures. Additional topics will include bankruptcy law, the prediction of business failures, and business fraud. A significant component of the seminar involves business leaders coming to campus to share their knowledge and unique perspectives on the topic. Additionally, seminar participants receive the wonderful opportunity to network with these business professionals.

Next fall semester’s BLDP seminar will meet on Friday mornings from 9:00 – 11:40 a.m., and will be taught by Dr. Troy Janes, Assistant Professor of Accounting. Articles from Dr. Janes’ research interests on behavioral influences in stock markets have appeared in The Economist, Forbes, and The New York Times. His professional experience includes time as an auditor and real estate consultant at Ernst & Young.

Admission to the three-credit seminar is by application only, and the three credits count as a general business elective. The online application can be found at http://camden-sbc.rutgers.edu/BLDP. General admission criteria to apply for the BLDP seminars are: 1) SBC or CAS student with sophomore standing or above; 2) Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above; 3) Student has an interest in topic of leadership and/or has demonstrated initiative or leadership qualities. Those students who do not meet the criteria, but who are interested in the seminar, may still apply and possibly be admitted to the seminar and will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.

Students who apply by the early deadline of March 9, and are accepted will receive priority into the course and will also have received their acceptance letters in time for early registration. As space permits, however, applicants not meeting this early deadline may still apply for admission to the seminar. To enhance one’s chance of being admitted to the BLDP seminar, a student is strongly urged to apply by the early deadline. Space in the seminar is limited to 15 students.

Recent Changes to BLDP:

·         Sophomores are now permitted to apply for (and if accepted, enroll in) the BLDP seminars.

·         Students from the College of Arts and Science (CAS) are permitted to apply to take the BLDP seminars. The seminar topics have broad appeal to students with different backgrounds. Additionally, non-business students may bring a unique perspective to the discussion. If you have any friends who are in the CAS who you think would be worthy candidates and who might enjoy the BLDP seminar topic, please encourage them to apply.

General information about the BLDP and the application process is available at http://camden-sbc.rutgers.edu/BLDP . You may also contact the director of the BLDP, Allie Miller, at ldrshp@camden.rutgers.edu

HONORS THESIS

School of Business juniors:  As you are thinking about next year’s courses, I would like to remind you that the School of Business has an Honors Thesis option.   It is designed to encourage student participation in academic business research and to give promising students an added opportunity to exhibit their abilities.

An Honors Thesis is a research project that the student carries out, under supervision of a faculty thesis advisor, during the student's two senior semesters. The thesis must involve the comprehension of academic literature, data collection or a systematic theoretical analysis, and the writing of an academic research paper.  The thesis must be approved by both the student's thesis advisor and a second School of Business faculty member.  In addition, all honors thesis students must give a presentation on the results of their project to the faculty and students.

The student who completes an acceptable Honors Thesis receives six course credits (over two semesters) and graduates with "thesis distinction."  Eventually, there will be a plaque displaying the names of all School of Business honors thesis students.

Qualifications

To be eligible to do an Honors Thesis, a School of Business student must meet three qualifications:

1.     The student must have completed at least 75 degree credits (with at least 30 of these credits completed at Rutgers).

2.     The student must have a grade-point average of at least 3.30.

3.     The student must find a faculty member to serve as his/her thesis advisor and must find one to serve as a second reader of the thesis.  A thesis advisor must be a full-time School of Business faculty member; the second reader can be either a full- or part-time School of Business faculty member.

If you are interested in the possibility of doing an Honors Thesis, the first step is to talk to faculty members who might serve as advisors.  Please note that the School makes no commitment as to the availability of appropriate faculty members to serve as advisors.  Interested students are encouraged to begin the process of finding an advisor and second reader during the second semester of their junior year.

For more information about the School of Business Honors Thesis, please contact Professor Robert Schindler, rschindl@camden.rutgers.edu, 856-225-6716.

INDEPENDENT STUDY PROGRAM:

HAVE YOU FILED YOUR FORM WITH DEAN MUSE?

The SBC has implemented a standardized registration procedure for enrollment in an independent study course (link below). This process was put in place to provide safeguards and oversight to benefit both students and faculty. Unfortunately, it has not been followed by all who want to pursue an independent study course this semester. To be officially registered for an independent study, you (the student) must submit and an approved and signed application to the Academic Services Office to complete the registration process. Students, who have not done so, risk the prospect of not receiving a grade for the course and possibly unable to graduate in May. I strongly urge all students involved in independent study projects this semester to comply with this process.

The deadline for independent study registration was Friday, Feb. 20th. If you have missed the deadline, see Dean Muse immediately!
